A look back on 2017 – and what a year it was!

carole baxter

It’s been a blooming marvellous year at Mackenzie & Cruickshank and without a doubt, 2017 has been one of the most significant for the garden centre in a long time.

Growing bigger

The key event for us was the opening of our new half a million-pound extension which was a long time in the planning.

The development was officially opened in April by Beechgrove Garden presenter Carole Baxter and encompasses a new plant market, pet zone, area for garden accessories and more space for compost and pots.

The development also enabled us to employ two new full-time members of staff and all this extra covered space meant we were able to move things around in the existing space and extend our gift and clothing ranges too.

Events galore

At this time of year, the glass extension has meant that we have been able to stage more events and we had a very successful Winter Market Weekend featuring dozens of crafters from the area and two weekends dedicated to kids.

Our M&C Loyalty card and Over 65 Card customers are also growing with numbers doubling in the year – these reward cards mean our customers are treated to numerous offers throughout the year and are invited to exclusive events. Better still, both schemes are FREE to join.

Loyalty cards

Don’t forget we have the M&C scone card with our famous scones still a firm favourite within the coffee shop and more and more people are taking advantage of our free coffee tops ups in the morning and afternoon.

We’ve also had a slight shift in marketing with our customers receiving more and more offers and store information through our mailing list.

We are sending out postcards to customers for key events and our Facebook page followers grow day by day, with the staff and our marketing team always on hand to update the page and where necessary become stars of the social media channel and website – who could forget Peter and Melissa starring in our Christmas elf video!!

National award

2017 also saw us scooping a prestigious award at a national event in which big players such as B&Q, Homebase and John Lewis were also in the running.

We were thrilled to be named Best Independent Garden Centre after being nominated by our suppliers in the 2017 Glee Buyers Power List at the NEC in Birmingham.

We also brought you the first ever M&C Pet Show which we intend to run again next year – maybe with a few tweaks and we also put on more workshops than ever before including crafting, cake decorating, and the always popular reptile shows in the school holidays.

Coming soon…

In 2018 we will continue to host the Craft & Chatter with Varis Craft sessions every Wednesday morning and we hope to create more workshops too.

We also continued our commitment to supporting local events and fundraisers and this year handed out numerous raffle prizes and over £3500 was distributed.  The charities we supported included Marie Curie, The Royal British Legion, Forres Christmass Lights, Forres Camera Club, Forres In Bloom and MFR Cash For Kids. We also donated money to Uganda Aid Person to Person project run by Forres woman Marlyn Somers to buy equipment for the school over there.

Piping At Forres

Next year, we are throwing our weight behind Piping At Forres and will become a dedicated ticket outlet for the event which will be staged for the final year in the town.

We will also host the event’s ticket launch in April with a very special Junior Tattie Scone contest. Watch this space for that one!

We already have dedicated soup, breakfast and scone weeks to look forward to in the first quarter of 2018 and there will be plenty more exciting events throughout 2018.

We want to wish all our customers and staff a wonderful new year and offer a big thank you for their dedication throughout 2017.
